Everyday English Editor

The Everyday English Editor is a software tool based on the logic that it is easiest for people to understand words they use themselves. The higher the percentage of everyday English, the easier it is for them to absorb what is being said.

Using standard software on their PCs, users paste text into the Editor window of a secure website. Within seconds, the Editor shows the percentage of everyday words, based on its 17,500 word definition of everyday English. It also highlights non-everyday words, making it easy to spot clusters where readers may stumble and give up reading.

Text can be edited with the help of a thesaurus that gives everyday alternatives to less familiar words. Users can then re-analyse their information to check it has reached the required level of everyday English. Click here for examples.

The Editor’s research-based connection with everyday language gives it a big advantage over readability indices* used as indicators of ‘plain’ English. These are based purely on word and sentence length and have no connection with the reader’s language. It is also far less costly and subjective than the opinion of language experts.
